Our March Episode

S4E11: Bonus - Fergal Hickey Lecture 2023

March and April are always a busy time for our trainees, so we’re sharing some coverage of last years IEMTA ASM for those of you who couldn’t make it.

The 2023 ASM saw the inaugural Fergal Hickey Lecture, and who better to give the first lecture than Dr Fergal Hickey himself?! After commenting on how humbling it is to still be alive to present an eponymous lecture in his own name, Dr Hickey presents us a career long reflection of EM: where it was, where it is, and where it’s going. Never one to hold back, Dr Hickey addresses the topics pertinent to all of us trainees, and how they can be navigated going forward.

Don’t forget to get your tickets for this year’s ASM which will be held on Sat 27th of April in Albert Theatre, RCSI. You can find the link to tickets here.

TheCase.Report is an Emergency Medicine Podcast based in Ireland, made for all EM providers. Whether you’re a nursing student with an interest in EM or an ED SpR, there’s something for everyone in each episode.

Season 4 launched in September 2023 and each episode has show notes and infographics* available to complement your learning. The unfailing support from the Irish Association of Emergency Medicine has meant the podcast has been able to grow season on season and we’re so proud of the work of our trainees in creating such high quality educational material.

Right, lets get to it!

*Infographics exist for each season 4 episode and some but not all of the new bonus episodes. There are show notes for all episodes.

TheCase.Report Recap Rewind

Each month we’re looking back on an episode from previous seasons. For April our pick is….

S3E7: Ethylene Glycol ingestion - PEM/Tox

We’ll all remember (if at least vaguely) learning about ethylene glycol poisoning at some point in our training, but in this cracking episode from season 3, Karl, Stephen and Mo tackle a case of paediatric ethylene glycol ingestion from a snow globe.

When is it safe to discharge a patient or when do they need to be admitted? How can the anion and osmolar gap be used to help guide management? It’s all in the case, as well as some tips for communicating with autistic children and their parents.

And the icing on the cake is a wonderful bonus segment from Dr Gergana Semova who talks us through the approach to the sick neonate, perfectly complimenting our recent episode S4E6: Neonatal Sepsis!
